The Ford Anglia 105E was launched in 1959 as a 2-door small family saloon which provided 4 seats and dealt with the average familys requirments at the time of manufacture.
It featured a new overhead valve four cylinder over-square engine which was free reving and this a very eager reliable engine for this size of car.
The Anglia was available in either standard or Deluxe or super models. The deluxe model had a full width front grill and better interior trim compared to the basic model and both ran the 997cc engines, where as the super was produced in 1962 and had extras such as the extra chrome side trim and bigger 1198cc engine, also larger drum brakes and an all synchromesh gearbox.
The most striking feature of the new Anglia was the reverse rake rear windscreen which was incorporated into the design to improve headroom for rear passengers and aid visibility in wet weather.
The estate version of the Anglia did not join the Anglia range until 1961 and this was also available in standard or Deluxe specification.
The Anglia proved to be a very successful vehicle in both motor sport, and with the general public buying.
Just over one million Anglias were made before production ended in 1968.
June 1961 the 5cwt and 7cwt vans were introduced, based on the Ford Anglia 105e saloon range.
No sooner had the 307e van started rolling off the production line, than Kenex Coachwork Ltd built and registered it's first 307e Pick Up.
Ford also made the Anglia 105E Torino which was derived from the Ford Anglia 105E by the Italian arm of Ford. It was manufactured only during 1964 and 1965.
It used the chassis, doors, windscreen and all the mechanical parts of the 105e saloon , but the body shell was a completely new design.
The new design was drawn up by Michelotti and built by Officina Stampaggi Industriala (O.S.I)
Because of the Italian design there were know longer protruding headlights, rear wings and sloping rear screen, which made the attributes to the Anglia unique and desirable to look at. All of these stylings were replaced with a more "European" influenced body even though people did not reconise the car as a relation of the Ford Anglia.
Production of the Torino did not last long, as this model never really took off. This makes the Ford Anglia 105E Torino quite a rare variant of the Anglia family.
The number of Torino's sold in Italy were as follows:
1965 : 2847
1966 : 4220
1967 : 2032
1968 : 897
1969 only 11.
The total number of 105E Torino's built is unknown, but the number sold in Italy was 10,007.
The Ford Anglia was also a popular choice for ice cream vans of the time and took on a number of roof designs but, still used the basic bottom half classic shape of an Anglia van.
In time the Anglia after much success was replaced with the Ford Escort, which also proved to be a very popular car.
